With time, it becomes easier to "get out there" and to re-establish and renew relationships that have become distant. You may even find yourself taking on new roles and doing new things. This can be difficult and rewarding.

For example, if the person who died was the one who organized your family dinners, you might have to step up to fill that role. The sense of accomplishment can be worth the risk of leaving your comfort zone. Your family may even thank you for it.
