Chapter 4: Why am I feeling this way?

Gender and grieving

When Mom talks about her brother Jeff, Dad leaves the room and goes out for a walk. I guess they have different ways of dealing with Jeff's death.

My father never cries, but he did when my sister, his daughter, died.  It was scary to see this whole new side of him, vulnerable and afraid of what the future will bring.

Men and women grieve in similar and in different ways, which may or may not fit with common stereotypes. Some people face grief by thinking, problem-solving, and engaging in activities. Others respond more emotionally, expressing their feelings with depth and intensity. Most of us do a bit of both.
