Chapter 6: Caring for yourself

Introduction

I learned that saying “no” was okay and that it was sometimes the best thing I could do for myself.

My neighbours brought over some soup and bread when they heard the news. I was grateful because I barely had the energy to eat, let alone to cook something.

When someone you care about has died by suicide, caring for and looking after yourself might seem an impossible and unwelcome task. It’s important to remember that caring for yourself doesn’t mean doing everything by yourself.

Grief can be exhausting and overwhelming. Caring for yourself includes meeting your basic needs, knowing your limits, setting boundaries, and seeking help and support from others when needed.
