Chapter 2: Meals and feeding

Introduction

Before she was sick, she would make supper for me, then I was doing it more and more, then I was doing all the grocery shopping. It evolved over time to the point that I was the primary caregiver.

Among the many types of support caregivers provide, meal preparation is usually high on the list. While it is important to try to maintain the social aspects of eating, the person who is ill will experience changes in their appetite and may ask for changes to what foods are offered or how they are prepared. 

The importance of food

Food and nutrition play a vital role throughout our lives and are necessary to keep us alive. We often associate eating with some of our fondest memories – time spent with friends and family, and cultural celebrations such as birthdays, Christmas, Hanukkah, Ramadan, and Kwanza.
